Pet Friendly Cruises
by Claire Collins
Cruises are becoming increasingly popular and it's easy to see why. Having every need met whilst relaxing aboard a luxury liner and visiting fascinating places is a good way to spend your holiday. However, some people are put off the thought of travelling when they realise that they will have to leave their beloved pets at home. Fortunately, some enterprising cruise operators now offer pet-friendly cruises.
There's always the option of charter cruise deals, which is a great option if there is a group of you - and the pets can come along too! There are plenty of pet-friendly charter companies, including Paradise Charter Cruises. They do welcome animals on their trips, and they also aim for a luxury atmosphere for passengers, meaning you AND your animals can enjoy the journey in style.
For trans-Atlantic journeys on a real cruise liner, than it's worth considering the Queen Mary II (QM2), which do allow pets to join passengers. Since 2004 there have been more than 500 pets come aboard, thanks to their animal-friendly facilities. With several air-conditioned kennels and doggy treats, such as a bona-fide London lamp post and New York hydrant for them to "utilise", this is sailing in style for your pet! You can only visit your animal within the kennel but at least you know they'll be well looked after.
There are even gifts for your dog on the QM2 as well - they get freshly made dog snacks, a souvenir pet coat with the cruise line logo, Frisbees, a cruising certificate and you can even get your photo taken with your animal as well! You can't say the QM2 don't treat their passengers' pets as one of their own!
Cunard cruises also welcome animals. Since 1840 circus elephants, canaries, a monkey and even a boa constrictor have travelled with Cunard. According to records, some famous pets have elected to cruise and stay with Cunard. In the 1950's Elizabeth Taylor brought her dogs on the original Queen Mary and regularly exercised them on the sports deck. She even ordered special meals to be cooked for them by the fish chef.
