Tips Before Buying A Boat Trailer
by Greg Tilley
You can't go wrong with a boat trailer because it's a dual purpose device. It allows you to explore new areas by taking your boat down the road and provides a convenient way to store the boat. Good trailers must perform both duties equally as good.
Most people that buy boats are not into getting the trailer, but the boat. They end up getting a cheap trailer but they're more than willing to spend money on a boat. These tips will help you with buying a trailer if you want the most from boating.
The total weight of the boat, gear, and motor should be in the mid range of trailer's carrying capacity. If you have a boat with the same weight, you shouldn't pick a 2,500 capacity trailer.
Larger diameter tires and wheels is what you should go for. Rotating less times per mile are the larger tires which means less heat and wear on the tread. Because they rotate less times per mile, the wheel bearings will last longer.
You should look for trailers with "drive on" capabilities. Because of drive on trailers, you can drive the boat onto the trailer close enough that all you need to do is winch it up a few inches.
The trailer lights you selected should be sealed and protected against water.
Base your trailer on the environment it will be operating in. If your purpose is to launch in salt water, then choose the right trailer for that. There are many types of trailers available, each one designed for a specific type of boating.
Protected against rust and weather are most trailers but it's still better to pick one that's designed for the terrain you'll be using it with. You wouldn't have to worry about your trailer not doing the job it's designed for.
For those who plan to travel long distances, trailers that include spare tire is an excellent investment. Having a spare tire is great if you get a flat while you travel since finding trailer tires in the dark is hard.
Saving you a lot of time and money are boat trailers. Your boat can be stored on your trailer if you're not going to use it or take it to the ocean or lakes. All that's left is to find a boat you'll need and a trailer will open up new roads for you.
