Mediterranean Yachts Charters
by Jim Hasgett
Travelers looking for some guidance about Mediterranean yacht charter should focus on two things. One is the choice of boat and crew (if required). The other is the choice of destination, which is not a big problem since all offer the same kind of bright and sunny weather, warm beaches and plenty of islands to explore.
Travelers can choose from among destinations like Greece, Croatia, Turkey, the French Riviera and Spain. It depends on what sort of trip and experiences the traveler is looking for. Greece, for example, allows travelers to explore both the Aegean and Ionian seas, with a big range of islands to visit including Santorini and Mykonos.
On the other hand, the French Riviera is a playground for wealthy boat-owners and celebrities, with such famous locations as Monaco, Cannes and Cote d'Azur. The choice of the boat offers just as many choices, including motor yachts, sailing boats, gullets and catamarans. The size of the boat and number of passengers decide how big (or not) the crew has to be.
For example, a typical Mediterranean yacht charter of around 50m will have 4 to 6 cabins and can take 8 to 12 guests out to sea. It will need, on average, a crew of around 10 sailors. Payment is usually made on a weekly basis (plus expenses).
If the boat is required for a corporate getaway, special event (party or concert) or simply a large tour group, then it will have to be a lot bigger. For instance, for an event out at sea where 100 guests are expected, the boat would need 50 cabins and at least 40 members in the crew. The boat would have to be around 90 or 100m in size. Conversely, a small family or group that knows where the bow and stern are can make do with a small catamaran without a crew.
The catamaran has two hulls which provide more stability compared to a monohull boat, and the heel is also less. Passengers aren't spending all their time bracing against gravity, so it's not as tiring. An amateur yachtsman without much experience can easily handle a Mediterranean yacht charter if it is a catamaran. It makes for a lot less work and a lot more eating and drinking, and the view isn't bad either.
