Portugal - Premier Holiday Destinations

by Mark Walters

Are you looking for a holiday destination but aren't sure where to go? If so, then read on to find out about some of Portugal's best holiday destinations, all of which are definitely worth visiting. For example, while they aren't part of the Portuguese mainland, the Azores are a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean that are definitely worth a visit. They are largely volcanic and there are some stunning lagoons and other scenery. The climate is good all year round, which helps to make them popular with tourists.

We also think the Algarve is a fantastic place to visit. Tourists have lots of choice - particularly in locations such as Lagos and Albufeira - as there are plenty of hotels in the region. It is especially popular with tourists from the UK and Germany. The climate is dry and hot and the Algarve is separated from the rest of Portugal by a group of mountains. It is in the south of the country and features over 150km of beautiful coastline that is well worth exploring.

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and is another great place to visit on holiday. As the streets are really steep, cable cars are popular for transport. The city has both new and old quarters, which all offer a fantastic city experience. You could relax in the old part of the city on one of the many terraces, which are great for sitting back with coffee and food. There's also good nightlife, museums, mosaics and inns, making the westernmost city in Europe a brilliant place to be.

We also think the Madeira Islands are a great Portugal holiday destination. Like the Azores, the Madeira Islands aren't part of the mainland and instead form an archipelago 700 miles southwest of Portugal. There is great scenery, including breathtaking mountains along with a mild year-round climate, which is very appealing to the tourists that visit. The islands also offer fantastic facilities and they are home to the famous Madeira wine as well as a thriving agricultural industry, which is well worth exploring on your visit.

Our last Portuguese holiday destination suggestion is Porto, which is also known as the Granite City. This is because so many of its buildings are made out of granite and iron, including some historic churches. Some of Portugal's best wine is made in the region, which is in the north of the country. Porto is the country's second largest city and also a European Capital of Culture. It combines old, winding streets with new roads to create a lovely, cosmopolitan experience that all travelers are sure to find appealing.
