Common Cruise Ship Amenities
by Mark Edwards
I love taking cruise ship vacations because of the cruise ship amenities. This is why when it comes to vacations I would rather take a cruise instead of taking a family road trip, staying at a bed and breakfast or even a fancy hotel.
Without the amenities - a cruise ship wouldn't be a cruise ship it would just be a pretty boat.
The first amenity that comes to mind is of course the pool. But pools are common everywhere even the cheapest flea-bitten hotel has a pool.
The difference between a cruise ship swimming pool and your traditional hotel pool is the variety. There is at least one pool for the big kids (and adults) as well as a kiddy pool.
Unless you want to spend your entire pool time surrounded by kids - you should make sure to book a cruise with an adult only pool.
We don't have kids so we always make sure we only go on cruise ships with adult only pools.
Because I've yet to drink enough Pina Coladas to drown out screaming kids at the pool.
You can't think of going on a cruise without thinking of spending time at the hot tubs.
The heck with pools - let's talk about the important stuff - the food.
On a ship you are surrounded by food.
Whether you love salad or if you're like me and think salad is something your food ate before it ended up on your plate - there are multiple choices for you.
All ships will have a buffet and a main dining room. Newer ships will also have secondary speciality food stations that server things like hot dogs, pizza and hamburgers.
If the ship has a speciality restaurant separate from the main dining room - we usually take advantage of it as a nice change of pace. But keep in mind these restaurant's are usually an extra charge.
Did you know you could get your teeth whitened at sea? I didn't until my last cruise where I saw that you could have this done while at the spa. You could of course just get that mani/pedi you've been needing for the past year.
The spa is one of the busiest amenities on the ship and so you need to book your time early - usually before you even unpack.
The benefit of taking in a spa while in port is more attention paid to you because there's not a long line of people.
Nothing is less fun than dealing with a bored child at sea. So make sure your cruise ship offers activities for your kids. This shouldn't be a problem because most do.
Whether this is your first time or just wanted a reminder of why you loved that last cruise - you don't want to forget the amenities.
