Gold Coast Fishing Charters: Fishing Locations
by Kim Raymond
If you have decided that you want to go on a Gold Coast fishing charter a natural question you may be asking is "where exactly do we go fishing?" Also "how far do we go out to sea?" Read on and I will answer these important questions.
There are of course numerous options of where your Gold Coast fishing charter will take you. The options are only limited by the captains knowledge and expertise. So your first port of call may be to find out a little about the background and history of the captain/s of the charter boat company that you are speaking to.
The first target area of Gold Coast fishing charters, that is most highly frequented, is the area from Gold Coast Seaway out as far as 24 fathoms or about five nautical miles. This general area consists of rocky reefs surrounded by sand and gravel. These reefs comprise varieties of deep water weed and coral growth. Since these reefs attract large schools of bait fish species such as mackerel, pilchards, yellowtail scad (also known as yakkas), scavenger and predator fish species abound.
Going further out to the 10 nautical mile mark, at a depth averaging 36 fathoms, there exists parallel ridge systems that run north and south adjacent to the Gold Coast coastline. Going even further to 15 nautical mile mark the same ridge systems occur at 50 fathom depths. It is noteworthy to state here that most Gold Coast fishing charter companies do not go past the 24's for a half day charter.
As a general rule, since the reefs out to 24 fathoms are most frequently fished, the chances of catching more fish and larger fish lies in getting on a Gold Coast fishing charter that will take you out to the 36 fathoms or 50 fathom marks or beyond.
For those Gold Coast fishing charter enthusiasts who want to catch that big whopper of a fish, I suggest you make a booking to go out during the summer months out to the 50 fathom depths and beyond where you can catch the larger free swimming pelagic fish as they migrate south with the warm deep blue currents.
Finally, for those wanting a more gentle experience and perhaps wanting to avoid potential sea sickness, another option is to fish in the protected waters of the seaway and estuaries. These waters cover sandy and mud flats where certain species of fish abound.
