Four Brothers Created Johnson Outboard Motors And The Name Lives On

by James Bennett

Lou, Harry, Julius and Clarence Johnson used to play on a river. This river was a source of relaxed recreation for the brothers, especially their favorite place, a walnut grove. In an attempt to create a motor that could reach this spot the siblings built a motor to power their small boat. A company was born. A product ingrained in boating history, the Johnson outboard motors.

That was not the limit of the brother's inventiveness. They also were the catalyst for America's first monoplane flight with the building of an airplane engine. The brothers worked well together. They shared idea, lacked jealousy of each other and put the good of the many before the good of the few.

The company produced the first heavy outboard motor beginning in 1926. In an effort to place their product in easy reach of a vast testing environment, the brothers also created the industry's finest example of a manufacturing plant for these products on the river they loved.

The company has changed hands a few times since then. It is currently owned by a watercraft manufacturing company which aims to continue the greatness of the motor's name.

Known for its reputation of consistency and durability the name's long history in outboard motors is testament to it success and growth throughout its history. Their products are in a growth spurt right now and other companies, competition included, are trying to emulate the business model.

Currently the company has two of the best engines of their type on the market. Among their inventory are the 25 hp and 9.9. Besides these, other products of theirs display a huge assortment to choose. The many models to choose from make the company the name to follow and emulate.

The four brothers from Indian are long dead but their name has continued on. Through depression and market crashes the one thing that keeps Johnson outboard motors going is the name. A name that is synonymous with the best of its field.
