Fish Species Caught On Gold Coast Fishing Charters

Of all the questions asked by people when they book a Gold Coast fishing charter is "what kind of fish do you catch?" Read on and I will give you a brief overview of the major fish species caught on Gold Coast fishing charters.
Snapper: A great eating fish and one of the most popular fish. Available in the estuaries as well as over both shallow and deeper reefs. The best time to catch these beauties is during the summer months.
Pearl Perch: Caught mostly over the deeper offshore reefs located 10-15 nautical miles out and all throughout the year when ocean currents are gentle. Great eating.
Teraglin: Similar to a small mulloway. A voracious school fish and is the most common catch on the closer reefs. The average size caught is 45-50 cm all year round. Generally the larger fish up to one metre are caught as you go into deeper waters.
Mackeral: Four types include Slimy, Tuna, Spanish and Spotted Mackeral. Slimy Mackeral are caught small around 300 g. in size. An oily fish that is good for smoking, pickling and an excellent bait fish for marlin and wahoo. Tuna Mackeral are caught around 10 kg. and commonly caught over the closer reefs. Spotted Mackeral grow up to 3-7 kg with Spanish Mackeral growing from 5-15 kg. Best time to catch them is toward the end of summer going into autumn.
Wahoo: This fish is big with powerful teeth. Expect a mammoth fight if you hook up with one of these babies. Great tasting fish with a white flesh.
Cobia: Another large fish caught around 5-25 kg. An opportunistic feeder caught over the full range of fishing grounds. Their run coincides with the whale season.
Black Marlin: Usually caught in the smaller range of 20-60 kg. over shallow reefs during the months of December, January and February. Larger Black Marlin as well as Blue and Striped Marlin are targeted all year round out to 25 nautical miles by specialist game fishing boats.
Mahi Mahi: A large fish that point on a very flashy performance. Sometimes swims right up to the boat.
Kingfish, Amberjack: These fish are great fighters and are usually caught over the deeper reefs.
Flathead: Commonly located over sand banks but are also prolific in deeper waters. Grow up to about one meter.
Bream: Scavenger fish . Likes the cover provided by rocky headlands. Good eating. Other fish species that you can expect to catch on a Gold Coast fishing charter include: shark and whiting and a number of less common species.
