How Are Catamaran Sailboats Different?
Catamaran sailboats are good for recreational sailing, for cruising in comfort, and for winning races. These double-hulled boats, although used in ancient days by native fisherman, are relatively recent sight at the sailing clubs of the world. However, they are now making a splash as they win races and influence people.
Although a catamaran easily won a race in an American regatta in 1877, the reaction was to ban the boats from competition, rather than to admire the feat. It was not until 1970 that competitions were open to the double-hulled boats. Now the 'The Race', a circumnavigation of the earth, has been won by a super-catamaran named the Club Med, interest in these boats is higher than ever.
In 1877 an American sailor won a race at a regatta with a catamaran, and the craft were immediately banned from sailing competition. This held true until the 1970s. However, it is now known that for speed, the double-hulled boats are unbeatable. The Club Med, a super-catamaran, won 'The Race', sailing around the world in sixty-two days. These fast, lightweight boats are now regularly seen at the Olympic Games
Many people who sail off beaches prefer the double-hulled boats, which can be grounded safely on sandbars and the shore, where they do not tip over like a monohull. The tillers are designed to be retractable, out of the way when the boat is run aground. These boats are fast but harder and slower to turn, but that is not a problem in open water.
Their stability is especially appreciated by those who sail in the ocean. They are much harder to capsize than a regular sailboat, although it is not impossible to flip them over. They are more difficult to learn on than single-hulled boats, so usually people learn to sail on a regular boat and then transition to a multi-hull.
