Montserrat's Soufriere Volcano

(Image from NASA)

I've been staying at the lovely Westin Dawn Beach in St. Maarten and have been waiting and waiting for the skies to clear because supposedly the faint grey outline in the distance is the island from St. Barths. How amazing to be able to view St. Barths from my balcony! But I am told Mother Nature has other plans and the restless volcanoe on the island of Montserrat is spewing ash this week.

There are many volcanos in the Caribbean, but this one is more active than most. In 1995 it errupted forcing more than half of the island's 12,000 residents to evacuate. The islnd is back open for business! Check out the Tourist Board's website.
